Luna Park St Kilda

The giant smiling face at the entrance of Luna Park Melbourne provides a portal to an alternate universe. The mouth echoes the medieval “Hellmouth” - a symbolic threshold dividing everyday life from wild, chaotic carnival experiences. The face may have been inspired by the Tarot Moon Card (illusion, fear, anxiety and the subconscious mind).

Vintage Luna Park in the 60s was creepy and eerie, terrifyingly fun. It featured the Scenic Railway, Big Dipper, Rotor, Giggle Palace, Ghost Train and River Caves. None of those attractions would be OH&S compliant today. All that is original is a framework of the railway, a fully restored carousel and the Luna Moon Face. The surreal multiple exposure images project the portal concept; passing over a threshold into a wild carnival world.
